Biosafety Committee

 
   

Objectives :

The IBC's primary objective is to safeguard protection of Dental Health Care Personnel, the general public, and the environment. To meet this goal, the IBC imposes requirements for safe laboratory and biological safety practices; reviews and approves policies, procedures, training, programs and facilities pursuant to the safe use of biological agents, other biological materials, and toxins. The IBC is responsible for infection control in dental settings.

Recommendations are provided regarding: 

1) educating and protecting dental health-care personnel;
2) preventing transmission of blood borne pathogens;
3) hand hygiene;
4) personal protective equipment;
5) contact dermatitis and latex hypersensitivity;
6) sterilization and disinfection of patient-care items;
7) environmental infection control;
8) dental unit waterlines, biofilm, and water quality; and
9) special considerations (e.g., dental handpieces and other devices, radiology, parenteral medications, oral surgical procedures, and dental laboratories).
 
On Broad headings IBC oversees: Personal Safety, Equipment and Apparatus Safety, Biological Safety, Chemical Safety, Radiation Safety, and Waste Disposal.
